Online prescriptions

Talk to an online GP about a prescription

Discuss a new prescription request, an existing prescription renewal or a medicine question with a HerDoc GP in a direct, real-time phone consultation. The GP will assess what is safe for you and explain the next step; a prescription is not guaranteed.

Can I request a prescription or renewal online?

Yes. You can discuss a prescription or renewal request directly with a HerDoc GP in a real-time phone consultation. The GP decides whether prescribing is safe and appropriate after considering your health, current medicines and the information available; the requested outcome is not guaranteed.

How it works

Speak with an Australian GP

Talk by phone with an AHPRA-registered doctor. Your GP can provide advice and, where clinically appropriate, discuss prescriptions, certificates, referrals, pathology requests or follow-up guidance during the appointment.

Often suitable for

  • General health and mental wellbeing
  • Women's health, menopause and perimenopause
  • Medication advice and prescriptions
  • Medical certificates, referrals and pathology requests

Not for urgent care

HerDoc is not for emergencies, crisis support or symptoms that need immediate hands-on care.

  • Chest pain, breathing difficulty or severe symptoms
  • Sudden or rapidly worsening symptoms
  • Mental health crisis or risk of harm
  • Symptoms that need a physical examination

For urgent or severe symptoms, call 000 or seek emergency care.

What you can discuss

The consultation can cover a medicine you already use, a possible new prescription, side effects, possible interactions or questions about monitoring. You can name the medicine privately to the GP during your intake and consultation, even though HerDoc does not publish a public list of medicines.

Choose the guide that best matches your question:

  • Medication questions for side effects, interactions, missed-dose questions and monitoring
  • How online prescription consultations work for preparation, the consultation and electronic prescription steps
  • Online prescription renewals for a medicine you already use
  • When online prescribing may not fit for limits and other care pathways

What the GP may consider

Be ready to explain what you are asking about and why. The GP may ask about your symptoms, diagnoses, allergies, current and recent medicines, non-prescription products, side effects, pregnancy or breastfeeding, previous care and any monitoring relevant to the request.

The information needed is different for each person. The GP may need more information, records, tests, an examination or continuity with another treating practitioner before making a safe decision.

What may happen after the consultation

If the GP decides to prescribe, HerDoc can send an electronic prescription token by SMS or email. A pharmacy can scan the token to retrieve the prescription.

The GP may instead provide advice, request more information, recommend monitoring or follow-up, or direct you to another practitioner or an in-person service. A pharmacy separately decides whether it can dispense a valid prescription and can answer questions about supply and pharmacy charges.

Why there is not a simple medicine list

Whether a GP can prescribe depends on your health, the medicine being discussed, the information available and whether telehealth is an appropriate setting. A medicine you have used before may still require current monitoring, medical records, an examination or care from your usual doctor.

You can tell the HerDoc GP exactly which medicine you want to discuss. After assessing your circumstances, the GP will explain whether they can prescribe, need more information or recommend another form of care.

For the governance boundary rather than service navigation, read the online prescribing policy.

When online care is not enough

Some requests need an examination, tests, monitoring, specialist input, continuity with a usual prescriber or another form of care. Requests subject to stricter legal or monitoring requirements are generally better handled face to face. The GP may decline or redirect any request when phone care does not provide enough information or is not the safest setting.

Do not wait for a routine online appointment if symptoms are severe, sudden, rapidly worsening or dangerous, or if you feel unsafe. Call 000, attend an emergency department or seek urgent local care; see when to seek urgent care.

FAQs

Can I get a prescription from an online GP?

You can ask a HerDoc GP about a prescription in a direct, real-time consultation. The GP will decide whether prescribing is safe and appropriate after assessing your circumstances, so a prescription is not guaranteed.

Can an existing prescription be reviewed for renewal online?

You can discuss an existing prescription renewal with a HerDoc GP online. Previous use does not make renewal automatic; the GP may need to review how the medicine is working, changes in your health and any monitoring before deciding.

Can I ask about a medicine without requesting a prescription?

Yes. You can use the consultation to ask about side effects, possible interactions, monitoring or another concern about a medicine you use. A medicine discussion does not have to result in a prescription.

Do I need to speak with the GP in real time?

Yes. HerDoc prescription consultations are conducted with the GP by phone in real time, not only by text, email or an online questionnaire. Information provided before the appointment helps the GP prepare but does not decide the outcome.

What should I prepare for a prescription discussion?

Prepare the name and strength shown on the label, how you currently take it, why you use it, when you last had it prescribed and how much you have left. Also list allergies, other medicines and supplements, side effects, recent health changes and relevant monitoring or results you already have.

Can I ask for a specific medicine?

You can explain privately to the GP what you are asking about and why. The GP is not required to prescribe what you request and may discuss a different next step after assessment.

What happens if the GP does not prescribe?

The GP may explain that more information, monitoring, an examination, continuity with another practitioner or a different service is needed. They may recommend follow-up, in-person care or another safe pathway, but the exact next step depends on the circumstances.

How would I use an electronic prescription?

HerDoc can send an electronic prescription token by SMS or email if the GP issues one. A participating pharmacy scans the token to retrieve the prescription; if you cannot access it, email support@herdoc.com.au.

Are medicine and pharmacy costs included in the GP consultation fee?

A short HerDoc consultation costs $49 and a long consultation costs $95; each consultation is charged separately. Medicine prices, dispensing charges and other pharmacy services are separate and are determined outside HerDoc; see HerDoc pricing for more information.

Is HerDoc available for emergency prescription requests?

No. HerDoc’s routine telehealth service is not an emergency service, and a prescription consultation should not delay urgent assessment. Call 000 or seek urgent local care for severe, sudden, rapidly worsening or dangerous symptoms, or whenever you feel unsafe.
